Diabetes

You can easily check your blood glucose yourself. You will require a blood glucose meter which can easily be bought from a pharmacy.

The target levels are:

  1. Fasting: <5.6  mmol/L
  2. Two hours after eating a meal: <7.8 mmol/L

Check your diabetes in four steps:

  1. Start by thoroughly washing your hand and let them dry.
  2. Prick the side of your fingertip using a sterile lancing device. Change the lancet each time you perform the test. It is very important not to use the same lancet on different individuals.
  3. Apply the drop of blood according to your blood glucose meter’s instructions.
  4. Wait until the result is displayed and record it in your diabetes logbook.

  • Take your results sheets with you every appointment to your medical practitioner.
  • Your doctor or your pharmacist will determine the HbA1c in your blood at regular intervals. HbA1cis a measure of the average blood glucose of the preceding 8-12 weeks and should preferably be 7% or lower.
